Key factors in the USA:

  • State and Federal funding of Higher Ed is on the way out
  • Students are left to foot the bill
  • Maturation of the Internet makes the real time and delayed virtual experience acceptable
  • Self-directed learning and open learning (outside the classroom) is becoming a viable alternative at an exponential rate, hence new models to assess prior learning has to be a top priority
  • Universities have to appeal to a far different population that just 5 years ago
  • Universities have to break free from the state controlled tuition structures and develop online tuition models independent of bricks and mortar logic.
  • Exponential growth in executive salaries has to be curbed
